Online retailers like Amazon ship goods all over the country and, as a result, the number of trucks on the roads is expected to rise in the coming years. Reports say that the jobs will be filled and the industry will improve only if more foreign workers from Africa and India join the force.

The trucking companies have even increased the pay of the drivers in an attempt to attract more people towards this industry.

The Process of Becoming a Truck Driver in the USA

Working Visa

Foreigners need a working visa to work in the USA. A truck driver would easily get a H2B visa if a good job offer is landed. Your visa should be sponsored by an organization or the employer. For H2Bworkers, the employer should have a submitted and approved Form |-129 and temporary labor certification. The next step is to apply for visa with the U.S. Department of State at the U.S. Embassy.

Driver’s License

A heavy vehicle driver’s license is required to drive a truck and most companies ask for Commercial Driver License (CDL). Have a look at the chosen state’s CDL Manual as rules may vary for different states. Depending on the type of vehicle you would be driving, you may have to appear for an exam to acquire the necessary skill set. Before you get the CDL, a Commercial Learner’s Permit is required which lets you practice on public roads with a qualified CDL holder sitting next to you.

You will possess the CPL for 14 days before the CDL test. To prepare for the test, you can depend on the CDL Manuel. Your documents will be processed once the test is cleared.

Legal Age

The minimum age to be a truck driver in the USA is 18 years. If your work needs you to cross state lines, your age should at least be 21. To drive intrastate in most states, you must be 18 years old, and to be able to drive across state borders, you must be at least 21 years old. To drive intrastate in Alaska, however, you must be 19 years old.

Physical Fitness
